Biotin: For Hair, Nails And Skin Growth

All About Biotin

Biotin is a loaded vitamin which is water soluble. It can easily be taken in, processed and expelled by the human body. It is part of the Vitamin B family and also known as B7. It plays a vital role in the growth of one’s hair, nails and in the health of one’s skin eyes and even nervous system. It also serves as catalyst in the breaking down of certain substances like fats, amino acids, carbohydrates and many others. Sometimes, biotin is referred to as “Vitamin H” because of its relation to the German terms “Haar und Haut,” which means “Hair and Skin.”

Biotin can be taken in various ways – be it through tablet, capsule, or syrup. It can also be applied onto the skin, hair or nails in the form of creams and moisturizers and even patches. But eating a healthy diet assures the presence of this “beauty vitamin” in the body. In fact, there are natural sources of biotin. The said vitamin can be found in common food like liver, kidney, egg (particularly its yolk), almonds, peanuts, walnuts and other nuts, cauliflower and broccoli, cereals and grains, soybeans, as well as bananas and mushrooms.

When it comes to processing these “biotin-rich” food, temperature must be taken into account. High temperature lowers the effect or performance of biotin in the human body. It is also better if one opts to consume organic and natural food rather than the food processed one because food-processing techniques like cooking and preserving can render biotin ineffective. High levels and more active biotin are present in raw or less-processed versions of the aforementioned food.

In Taking Biotin

Though the vitamin is water soluble, it is a must that proper dosage will be observed. The following identified the right amount of biotin intake for a particular age group:

  • 0-20 micrograms (mcg.) for 0-3 years old
  • 25 mcg. For 4-6 years old
  • 30 mcg for 7-10 years old
  • 30 mcg. to 100 mcg. for 10 and above (most adults)

In addition, for breastfeeding women, a higher dosage is recommended for healthier pregnancy and healthier baby.However, possible side effects occur to some people who have taken biotin supplements. They have experienced diarrhea, cramping and even nausea.
